Trump’s vilification of Denmark and apparent imperial land grab attempt in Greenland raise some important questions. First, is the strategic calculus of NATO insufficient to accommodate US interests? Secondly, does Washington think that sovereignty is a commodity? Just like Alaska, maybe! The third most important question is how much US President Donald Trump is willing to enforce the Monroe Doctrine and get entangled in neighborhood politics? Answering the above questions is important to understand the nature of American calculus for its own future, as it increasingly faces a multipolar world order.
Another question is also lingering. Is this US reaction to its own perceived Thucydides Trap! This is a speculation by me. Let’s see.
