The issue stems from the 3rd December announcement of imposition of martial law by President Yoon in South Korea. The martial law was declared by the former President who accused the presence of “anti-state forces”. The martial law was removed in just six hours after lawmakers fought their way inside the National Assembly and voted to overturn it. It included 18 lawmakers of Yoon’s own party as well. Post 3rd December drama, authorities including the head of the Police forces, former defence minister, etc remained in detention. AP reported that former defence minister Kim Yong-Hyun attempted suicide but was rescued by authorities. He remains under investigation for his role in the martial law imposition.

Acting President Han-Duck soo was impeached after his reluctance to appoint judges to the constitution court that is investigating Yoon. Han called it out of his powers to do so. The opposition called out Han as sympathizing with the suspended former President Yoon. The Guardian reported that one lawmaker called Han an insurrectionist. South Korea remains under a tense political crisis and it was the first time that an acting President was impeached by its Parliament.
